Following on from last week’s coverage of the Top 50 shows on Irish TV last year, Entertainment for Business has been advised by a key player in the sector of an anomaly that impacts on how the list should be viewed.
The Top 50 is restricted in that shows which are deemed to be part of a series are only featured with the top show from a run.
This means that Room to Improve, which came fifth in the list with viewing figures of 859,000, did not appear again on the list, despite a number of the others attracting the kind of audience that would have had them comfortable in the reckoning.
The same does not apply to sports events hence the strong showing of multiple games from the Six Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
The Late Late Toy Show topped the list again this year with an enormous audience of over 1.5 million and 72% share tuning in to see Ryan Tubridy and a cast of hundreds bring the Greatest Show to their homes.
This also seems to have been treated as a ‘special’ as the Late Late appears again on the list for the London show it broadcast in October.
Today we publish the full list of the 50 shows, though with ten of those featuring that could be classed as part of a series, from I’m a Celebrity to Dancing with the Stars and Fair City to Coronation Street, the reality of our viewing habits may yet require a little greater analysis.
