Falls from grace are never comfortable but few can have been as sharp as that of Michael Jackson’s reputation in the wake of the ‘Leaving Neverland’ documentary on Channel 4.
This afternoon it was confirmed by producers Showtime Australia that the four date Irish tour of Michael Jackson HIStory has been cancelled. All those who bought tickets for the shows in Cork Opera House, Vicar Street, Limerick and Castlebar will be entitled to a full refund.
Whether there will be any compensation for the theatres who now have dark nights to fill has not been made clear but it is unlikely that the tour, which has run around the world for five years, will be coming back anytime soon.
Michael Jackson impersonators will be hanging up their black fedoras and folding away their white gloves after the documentary carried lurid tales of Jackson having groomed and abused James Safechuck and Wade Robson.
He is of course no longer alive to defend himself and so the story will not be extended through the courts for his reputation lies in ruins.
RTÉ Radio were one of the first major broadcasters around the world to pull his songs from playlists, after initially being reluctant to do so across the board as an immediate reaction.
