In the lead up to today’s being World Mental Health Day, Three Ireland, in collaboration with its charity partner Jigsaw, has drawn attention to the increased role of Social Media in young people’s lives by releasing an online chat show highlighting the challenges young people face online and championing the value of having One Good Adult in their lives.

The show, entitled ‘It’s Good To Talk Show’ has seen host Stephen Byrne joined by social influencer and presenter, James Patrice; 2018 Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher and entrepreneur and actress, Aoibhín Garrihy to discuss the world of Social Media.

The areas covered included their introduction to and living a life online, dealing with negativity, their One Good Adult and the advice they would provide to Social Media beginners.

From MSN messenger to Twitter, the guests talk about their introduction to Social Media, and how their relationship with it has evolved over the years. Speaking on the impact of social media, Kirsten Mate Maher outlines how her announcement as winner of the 2018 Rose of Tralee changed everything for her with the initial thought of “look at all these people passing remarks on me now and they actually don’t know me”.

Opening up on negativity experienced on his Social Media, James Patrice cited his weight and sexuality as topics which were regularly referenced on his posts. Discussing one example which affected him, he praises his sister Vanessa for giving him sage advice which became a landmark moment for his Social Media experience, something which he still uses to this day.

Offering up advice to those who may be experiencing similar situations Aoibhín Garrihy, quoted her Father sharing one of his valuable contributions on the topic, “No one gives a duck about you” because everyone is so focused on themselves, a mantra both she and her sister, Doireann live by.

James Patrice ultimately provided wise council on approaching Social Media “Don’t forget that at the end of the day, social media was made to be fun”.
