As part of its 30th year in 2018, Fishamble: The New Play Company set out to find one, big, ambitious play, that bursts with humanity and tackles a subject about which the playwright feels passionate.

The search for a Play for Ireland drew 372 submissions, of which 30 were developed further and six placed on a shortlist.

After a lot of debate and discussion among the Fishamble team, and with the six theatre partner venues involved in the discussion The Alternative by Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney has emerged as the winner.

The play is an imagining of there never having been home rule or independence and now having arrived in 2019 holding a referendum on whether to remain within the UK.

Leave or Remain? A familiar political question but with a twist for Ireland.

The Alternative will premiere in the Dublin Theatre Festival as part of its nationwide tour in association with Draíocht, Everyman, Lime Tree Theatre & Belltable, Lyric Theatre, Pavilion Theatre and Town Hall Theatre in September and October 2019.

Great idea, well executed and perhaps something to be carried on with greater regularity than just for a 30th anniversary.
