Irish Production Company Element Pictures were celebrating in California last night as The Favourite star Olivia Coleman won the Best Actress Award at the Golden Globe Awards.
These are often seen as a serious pointer towards the Oscars next month and The Favourite was up for five of the Awards.
The Golden Globes split the categories into Musical or Comedy and Drama. Coleman picked up the former while Glenn Close will be a serious rival at the Oscars having picked up the award in the Drama category.
This is an important time of year for movies with a large number of heavyweight productions released now in time to capitalise on the Awards season. The Favourite has been doing well at the box office drawing down $26 Million to last weekend, despite getting an R Rating in the US.
It has a 15A rating here, we are obviously more comfortable with its Lesbian theme than in the US, and was released here last week.
“We are thrilled for Olivia and all the team of The Favourite,” said Producer and Co-Founder of Element Pictures, Ed Guiney.
“This award coincides with the opening weekend for the Favourite in Irish cinemas which gives Irish audiences the opportunity to see the film for themselves. We are very proud of the film and hope that Irish audiences respond to the film as enthusiastically as the international response to date.”
Saoirse Ronan won the same Award for Ladybird this time last year.
Other winners last night included Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody which won the two Best Movie Awards.
