The first of the major superhero blockbusters smashed onto Irish screens last weekend and provided a significant boost for theatres.

Captain Marvel, backed by a major media and digital advertising campaign paid off handsomely with revenues over the weekend of €878,045.

That was part of a $455 Million global take and it has become the third biggest March movie launch in history.

To put that into perspective the previous week’s top-earning movie was The Lego Movie 2 with €183,606.

A differential of almost five times is enough to make theatre owners and accountants perk up

Acclaimed Irish horror movie The Hoile in the Ground dipped from €68,163 of box office on its opening weekend to 35,239, despite showing on 70 screens to Captain Marvel’s 75.

The aggregate amount taken in by the Top 10 movies at the Irish box office last weekend was €1,382,135, a large 56 per cent up on the previous weeks €886,047.
