It started as a life and a career in engineering. Then it became the story of how an Irishman designed one of the most iconic buildings in the world. Then the book, then the screening of a film in the IFI Documentary Festival and now it is a movie that will go on release in Irish cinemas from March 1st.
An Engineer Imagines is the less than catchy title of a film which may set imaginations alight to the possibilities of a career in engineering.
It explores the world that exists somewhere between art and science, through the eyes of a man who had dreams that he was able to turn into reality.
Few in Australia or in Ireland might ever have fully appreciated the story of Peter Rice until the success of the 2017 biography and then the film of the same name.
It covers his involvement not only with Sydney but also the inverted pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Lloyds building in London and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
This is a tale of how the world of entertainment can unpick the mysteries of the world around us and make stars of those who build it. Think Dermot Bannon but on an epic scale.
It is the kind of project that Engineers Ireland or one of the big engineering firms like Jones Engineering or Engineers Ireland should get behind and promote. Who knows, maybe even BAM who are in an uncomfortable spotlight over the National Children’s Hospital at present might see the sense in backing the movie to attract an even wider audience, perhaps through sponsoring its broadcast on co funder RTÉ.
The trailer for the movie has just been released. It looks pretty spectacular.
‘An Engineer Imagines’ is a Fine Point Films and Igloo Films co-production. It has been part funded by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, RTÉ, Northern Ireland Screen, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and the BBC.
